You don’t have to be Gordon Ramsey to create a feast for your little one’s first birthday. In fact, it’s probably a good thing you’re not Mr Ramsey – all that swearing would just put a dampener on the day.
The thing to remember is: babies aren’t food snobs – most will happily eat crayons, if you let them. As long as you provide food that looks tasty and interesting then kids will be more than happy to give it a try. To help with the birthday menu, we’ve compiled a list of first birthday food ideas.
Tots like to eat with their hands – it helps with their coordination – hence why they like picking up, playing with and smothering it all over themselves (and you). That’s why sandwiches are a staple birthday dish. Soft fillings like cream cheese, ham and egg mayo go down a treat and other finger foods include; mini pizzas, bread sticks and pitta bread with hummus.
Even if your ‘Five a Day’ amounts to nothing more than a slice of raisin loaf and half a chocolate orange, there’s no reason not to give babies fruit. It’s sweet, flavourful and good for them. Plus it’s mushy, and we all know they like mushy foods.
It isn’t just babies that like biscuits; we can happily polish off a full packet provided we’ve got a cuppa that’s big enough! Biscuits are always a popular choice for babies, especially chocolate ones. Why not make your own and get the little chefs to decorate them – food and fun all rolled into one!
Jelly and ice cream is always a popular choice, but with one year olds ice cream can be a little too sensitive for their tiny teeth and giving them jelly is just asking for trouble. So why not try yoghurt instead. Loads of different flavours and kids love them! It doesn’t stop it going everywhere though.
A birthday without cake is like Christmas without Cliff Richard songs – it doesn’t happen. There are plenty of popular character cakes at the super market (let’s face it; who hasn’t wanted to take a knife to the ZingZillas once in a while?) or you can make your own for that personal touch. The big question is – chocolate or vanilla sponge?
