We have great fun working at Mamas & Papas HQ. There’s always something new and exciting happening, and even if there isn’t, we sit and have a play with Klank the Robot. Yet, every so often we feel the need to get out and about and meet some of the brilliant parents that make us who we are.
We had one of these days out recently, when we popped down to London for the launch of the Armadillo City.
We held a launch party in conjunction with the brilliant Mothers Meeting – a group of influential mums who really have their fingers on the parenting pulse! Together, we assembled a room full of some brilliant mums and their adorable little ones.
The event was held at the very swanky Ace Hotel in Shoreditch, which meant two things – one; we were treated to some incredible views of the city, and two; we had to dress up posh for the event. No sweat pants for us!
The day started off with a talk from mum-supreme and Mamas & Papas bigwig, Olivia. Olivia took our trendy mums through the new Armadillo City and, it’s fair to say, they were impressed. She explained that it came about because we wanted to create a version of the Armadillo that was even better suited to busy city-living parents – and what better city to launch it in than London?
After a few insider insights, Olivia handed the floor over to some very eager volunteers as we put the City’s 3 second fold to the test! Three volunteers were each given a stroller – two from our competitors and an Armadillo City. We then held a competition to see who could work out the folding mechanism in the quickest time. Now, we don’t like to boast as it can be a touch immodest, but the Armadillo City mum folded her stroller in record time – leaving the other mums trailing behind in the dust (not real dust, it was a really swanky hotel)!
It was a great opportunity for mums to see just how easy and accessible the Armadillo City is. If they weren’t fans of it before, they are now.
Next up on the day’s itinerary was a talk from Urban Walkabout. They have travelled some of the greatest cities in the world and hand-pick the best undiscovered hang outs. These choices then make their way into their free, delicately designed guides. They’re the ideal companion when you’re out exploring with the Armadillo City.
After some well-deserved teas, coffees and biscuits we were back in competition mode. Hosting our Fold-Off relay race was a great way to get the mums involved and it certainly brought out their competitive streaks. 7 teams of 7 mums were folding strollers like lightning and with 7 Armadillo City’s up for grabs; it’s easy to see why the tensions were high. It was like the Olympics, only with more pushchairs.
Eventually – like every great battle – it came down to a draw, meaning that two teams had to hold a Fold-Off to sudden death. It was tense.
What followed was like a high-speed origami contest, with each mum folding and then unfolding their Armadillo City. Eventually to many cheers, and some sighs of defeat, a winner was crowned. The champion and her team all won an Armadillo City each but our heart goes out to the worthy runners up.
It’s very hard to know where to go after a tense battle like that so we decided to wind things down as everyone caught their breath. Not before we gave out some devilishly fun goodie bags!
With a ‘Kin’ magazine, our new Autumn/Winter catalogue, a £5 gift voucher, Kiddylicious snacks, Hipp organic baby food, Cussons bath products, a Pedro and Urban Walkabout goodies, it’s fair to say that no mum went home empty handed. We even had some brilliantly designed balloons from Bonbon Balloons that just happened to go missing… You know who you are, mums!
So all in all it was a very successful day. We met some genuinely brilliant mums, celebrated the launch of the Armadillo City, and got out of the office for the day. What a success. After all that excitement though, we’re happy to be back in our sweat pants!
